The tables

Shipping, payment method and discount codes each take a cut of every order before you see the money. This page shows what each one takes, and whether it earns it.

All three tabs carry the same columns: Total SalesTotal SalesYour true top line and the anchor for every efficiency metric., % Total Sales% Total SalesShows how important this segment is to overall revenue., OrdersOrdersA simple, powerful demand signal; watch its trend., AOVAOVYour average order size, and a direct lever on revenue., AOQAOQAverage basket size across your orders.2.5 or more is healthy, % Returning Orders% Returning OrdersShows how much of your order volume depends on loyal customers., % New Orders% New OrdersIndicates how much order volume is driven by newly acquired buyers. and % Discounts% DiscountsHow much of your revenue is given back as markdowns.Under 8% is healthy, each followed by a % △ except % Total Sales.

All three open sorted by Total Sales, highest first.

Shipping Type

This answers whether free shipping is buying you a bigger basket, or just costing you the postage.

Two rows: free and paid. This tab splits orders by whether shipping was charged, not by carrier or delivery speed.

How to scan it

  1. Read the two rows against each other rather than sorting.
  2. Compare AOV on free against AOV on paid.
  3. What matters: if free shipping is not lifting AOV above the paid row, your free-shipping threshold is set too low to pay for itself.

Payment Method

How someone pays says a lot about whether they come back. This is where that shows up.

One row = one payment method recorded on the order.

How to scan it

  1. Sort by Orders, highest first.
  2. Look across at AOV and % Returning Orders.
  3. The row that matters: a wallet or pay-later method with plenty of Orders and a low % Returning Orders. It is bringing one-time buyers.

Discount Code

This tells you which codes brought new money in, and which ones handed money back to people who were buying anyway.

One row = one discount code. Orders that used no code sit in the - row.

How to scan it

  1. Sort by Total Sales, highest first.
  2. Look across at AOV and % New Orders, and hold each code against the - row.
  3. The code that matters: strong Total Sales, AOV under the - row, % New Orders low. You are paying regulars to buy what they would have bought anyway.

Filters

Set the comparison period first. Without it every column here is a number instead of a direction.

Date Range and Previous period feed every % △ column on all three tabs.

The Filters button opens Country, Customer Type and Order Source. The dialog notes that source and customer type apply only to Shopify orders.

Search filters rows only — useful on Discount Code, where a seasonal code family shares a prefix.

The chart switch adds a Dimensions picker (up to 10 rows), a Metrics picker (up to 3, starting on Total Sales) and a Compare checkbox. Export downloads the current view.

Watch out for

One order can appear in more than one row on Payment Method and Discount Code. Two codes on an order, or a gift card plus a card, and the full order value is added to both rows.

That makes Total Sales on those two tabs add to more than your store figure. Shipping Type does not have the problem, because an order is either free or paid and never both.

The - row is not a method or a code. It is every order with nothing recorded in that field, and on Discount Code it is your full-price business — usually the most useful row on the tab.

Shipping Type only ever holds free and paid, decided by whether the shipping charge on the order was zero. It will not tell you which carrier or which service was used.

These three tabs count orders, not people. The Region tabs and the Breakdowns Date tab count customers, so the two sets of percentages will not line up.

Typing in Search hides the totals row instead of recalculating it.

Do this first

Open Discount Code and sort by Total Sales, highest first.

Read each code's AOV and % New Orders against the - row directly above or below it. A code that beats full price on neither is buying you nothing, and it is the first one to retire.
